Where to find a good electrician

If I got a pound for every time I heard how hard it was to find a good electrician in Birmingham, I would be a millionaire! Despite all the efforts made to simplify the process of finding an electrician to carry out work in homes, it still remains a confusing process for the public, who don't always realise where the best places to look are.

There are no shortage of directories, adverts and vans out there, but how do you know if the person you are about to take on is really going to do a great job – how can you distinguish between average and great?

Should Electrical Checks become Compulsory?

Government officials are currently debating electrical safety in rented homes with a view to making electrical checks a compulsory requirement for landlords.

The state of play at the moment

Currently, it is only a recommendation to have an electrical check carried out in a rented property. Additionally, it is also highly recommended to Portable Appliance Test (PAT) all electrical appliances supplied as part of the rental agreement i.e. washing machines, kettles, electric heaters etc.

Landlords – are you aware of your electrical responsibilities?

I work with a growing number of landlords in the Coventry and Birmingham areas to ensure their homes are up to rental standard.

It may seem obvious that your rental property must be electrically safe, however many of my clients who rent out properties thought they were following the recommendations, but unfortunately because of poor advice or bad electrical work they find that more work needs to be done to bring properties up to rental standard.

Landlords – are you falling foul of response times?

When a tenant reports a problem in one of your properties, do you tend to it as a matter of urgency or ignore the problem until you get reminded by the tenant?

Repeatedly ignoring requests from your tenants and failing to resolve problems within your property could see you landed in court, your tenant holding onto the rent they owe you or worse still a serious incident taking place within your property as a result of your negligence.

Expert electricians in Coventry – Electrical Safety Awareness

Today whilst grabbing a quick breakfast in a Coventry café, an electrical awareness article sponsored by a well known gas company caught my eye. The article quite rightly stated that an inspection of the cable in your home was recommended in order to maintain a safe standard of electrical safety. As part of the electrical services in Coventry that I offer, I always recommend to home owners that they have an EICR carried out on their property if they have not had one carried out within the last 10 years.

Using Electrical Sockets Safely at home in Birmingham

Last weekend I received a call out to an electrical problem in a flat In Birmingham being let to students. The landlord had informed me that there was no power in the flat.

Nothing unusual to begin with I might add. However when I got there I soon realised that I was looking at a very dangerous scenario. Thank goodness no one was injured or killed – luckily the electricity tripped before someone became a victim of electrical injury or death.

Entertainers – when did an electrician last check your equipment?

Entertainers come in many forms from magicians to disco DJ's, bands and stand up comedians. Whatever your clients tastes, most entertainers will have one identical need – and that is a need for electricity. Whether you need power for speakers, a microphone, amps or decks, it is imperative that your equipment is as safe as the supply you are plugging into.
